GREENBERG VAN DOREN GALLERY, St. Louis, MI (2004)

Specifier: Slade Architecture, Architect / New York, NY
Installer: Golterman & Sabo / St. Louis, MO

Project: The newest addition to the thriving Grand Center Arts District in St. Louis, the highly respected Greenberg Van Doren Gallery re-opened its newly renovated doors in October 2004.

The gallery specializes in the works of modern and contemporary masters, including paintings, sculptures, and drawings, and pursues a local, national, and international clientele.

Slade Architecture considered the client’s goals, existing conditions, and cultural context to produce a project that is both unique and relevant. Various Newmat systems are featured throughout the three stories of this 15,000 square foot building.

Newmat white lacquer membranes were incorporated into the design of the gallery ceilings, and NEW/LIGHT white translucent membranes with fluorescent backlighting were curved around an existing skylight, which allows for the ceiling to appear like an endless soft light.

James Slade skillfully balanced the image reflection of the white lacquer membranes together with the light transmission of the translucent membranes to achieve this fluid design.
