LITTLE THEATER AT ST. JOHN’S UNIVERSITY, Queens, NY (2010)
Specifier: Iu + Bibliowicz Architects / Architect
Installer: NEWMAT USA LTD.
Project: As part of a recent renovation, Iu + Bibliowicz Architects needed a ceiling system which would provide ambient lighting for the Little Theater while achieving a compound curve design.
NEW/LIGHT white translucent double-layer ceiling membrane system was chosen to cover the 3,000 square feet of ceiling area in the required design.
In addition, a custom curved perimeter extrusion allowed the ceilings to return vertically giving them a three dimensional appearance. The lighting system is designed to tailor the light output according to the theater’s needs.
The final result provides great lighting performance and adds considerable volume and height to this new space.
This project received an AIA New York State “Design Award of Excellence” in 2010.
